- the model's simple heat budget breaks down in certain areas when it is given high cloud cover, high humidity and low wind speeds. It represents longwave sensible and latent heat loss, but under these conditions the low wind speeds prevent substantial latent or sensible heat loss, and becaused the cloud is not interactive, this can't be balanced by the longwave heat loss. In reality what would happen here is that the cloud would burn off and one would expect to see increased longwave heat loss because of the loss of cloud, and potebntially convection getting rid of the excess heat. This is probably in practice never an issue over the ocean, because the wind speeds are high enough to allow latent and sensible heat loss to balance incoming heat, but near the coast line, if prescribing atm. conditions from a model with grid boxes that cross land and ocean, those grid boxes can have v. low wind speeds. This could be fixed by (1) giving the model a minimum wind speed (2) adding a parameterisation to reduce teh cloud cover at high SSTs (2) avoiding using data from atm. model grid boxes that are partly over land.
